Can you become Licensed?

To claim Licensed Education Counsellor status of the Education Counsellor Authority of New Zealand Ltd. you must be licensed here and listed on our Register, but it is not unlawful to be unlicensed/unregistered here when giving education advice. Registration here gives no points towards residence in New Zealand and is not part of any Government occupational/vocational licensing/registration scheme in New Zealand.

To become a Licensed Education Counsellor of the Education Counsellor Authority of New Zealand Ltd., you must be at least 18 years old, AND

  1. Meet the requirements to hold a Director Licensed Education Counsellor license (you must have supervised at least one licensed education counsellor for at least 1 year).

OR

  1. Meet the requirements to hold a full Licensed Education Counsellor license (your application must be supported by a Director license holder and/or you have been supervised for at least 2 years OR you hold a full Licensed Immigration Adviser license in New Zealand, OR you hold a full MARA Immigration Agent license in Australia, OR you hold a practising certificate from the NZ Law Society, OR you apply as an Australia-registered ASQA Education Agent under the TTMRA).

OR

  1. Meet the requirements to hold a Provisional Licensed Education Counsellor license (your application must be supported by evidence that you have practiced as a full-time Education Counsellor, OR that you hold a degree qualification, OR you have enrolled at least three students with a New Zealand education provider, OR you hold a provisional Licensed Immigration Adviser license in New Zealand, OR you hold a provisional MARA Immigration Agent registration in Australia).

OR

  1. Meet the requirements to upgrade from a provisional Licensed Education Counsellor license to a full Licensed Education Counsellor license (hold a provisional Licensed Education Counsellor license for at least two years and meet CPD requirements for the preceding two years, OR your upgrade application is supported by a Director license holder, or your LIA/MARA licensed has been upgraded from provisional to full).
 
Once you are accepted and registered here, you must complete at least one free CPD session within 90 days from the effective date of your first license, and maintain the requirement of at least five hours of CPD per year. You will be un-registered here when you fail to maintain the CPD requirements.
