Maintaining your ECANZ license

To claim Licensed Education Counsellor status of the Education Counsellor Authority of New Zealand Ltd. you must be licensed here and listed on our Register, but it is not unlawful to be unlicensed/unregistered here when giving education advice. Registration here gives no points towards residence in New Zealand and is not part of any Government occupational/vocational licensing/registration scheme in New Zealand.

All Licensed Education Counsellor licensed are issued for a period of two years.

A maintenance requirement for all Licensed Education Counsellor requirements is:

  1. A minimum of 5 hours of Continued Professional Development (CPD) per 12-month period of holding a Licensed Education Counsellor license consisting of the content shown below, with the first CPD hour occurring no later than on the 90th day after the issue date of your first ECANZ license;

OR

  1. Maintaining the registration requirements as a lawyer in New Zealand, either holding a Practising Certificate from the NZ Law Society or being an Enrolled Barrister or Solicitor;

OR

  1. Maintaining the registration requirements as Licensed Immigration Adviser in New Zealand evidenced by a listing on the IAA Register;

OR

  1. Maintaining the registration requirements as a MARA Agent in Australia:
OR

    5. Maintaining an ASQA registration as a registered education agent in Australia, and being eligible to apply for a ECANZ license under the TTMRA.
 

The minimum five hours on annual CPD for Licensed Education Counsellors, must include

– One or more hours delivered by a Licensed Immigration Adviser who is a member of the Licensed Immigration Adviser Association in New Zealand and holds a full LIA license,

AND

– One or more hours delivered by the Licensed Education Counsellor Authority of New Zealand Ltd. on counselling practices

AND

– One or more hours delivered by Education New Zealand through their AgentLab offerings or in sessions specifically delivered to ECANZ licensees.

The balance of any required hours may be delivered by a Director license holder, or on the direction of a Director license holder.

All CPD records must be delivered to ECANZ own request or at the time of re-licensing and only ECANZ-approved CPD will be considered when a license is renewed or upgraded.
