Anyone can call themselves a ‘counsellor’, but only those who agree to continued professional development, to adhere to a professional Code of Conduct and to submit to the Complaints Process of the Licensed Education Counsellor Authority of New Zealand Ltd., can become Licensed Education Counsellors of ECANZ. To claim Licensed Education Counsellor status of the Education Counsellor Authority of New Zealand Ltd. you must be licensed here and listed on our Register, but it is not unlawful to be unlicensed/unregistered here when giving education advice. Registration here gives no points towards residence in New Zealand and is not part of any Government occupational/vocational licensing/registration scheme in New Zealand.
New Zealand is an attractive study location and many will try to counsel students and their families about New Zealand study options. To protect prospective students from poor or wrong advice, ECANZ offers education counsellors the opportunity to join a group of Licensed Education Counsellors. This assures the community of students who select New Zealand for their education that a Licensed Education Counsellor advises with the knowledge and expertise of a professional expert who constantly learns, develops new skills and maintains a high level of professional responsibility when giving advice.
